Word Counter
Paste a draft and read the word count immediately. TextPilot splits words with the Unicode word-boundary rules built into your browser, so accents, emoji, and right-to-left text stay intact.
This draft stays in the tab. Opening a file reads it here and does not upload it.
Word count
0 words, 0 sentences, 0 paragraphs, 0 lines.
How to use it
- Paste, type, or open a text file. The file is read in this tab and is not uploaded.
- Read the word count. It updates on every change.
- Use the other figures on the same page when the assignment also asks for characters or sentences.
Example
A field guide works best when the first paragraph says what the reader will be able to do. I'm keeping this one under ninety words.
This sample is two sentences. The contraction I'm is one word, which matches the way the counter treats apostrophes.
Questions
What counts as a word?
A word is a word-like segment from Unicode word boundaries. Contractions such as I'm stay one word. Hyphens split well-known into two words. Numbers count. Emoji do not.
Why is a Chinese sentence not one word per character?
The runtime groups some Chinese and Japanese text into words such as 你好 rather than splitting every character. If the assignment counts characters, use the character counter. It counts visible graphemes.
Is the draft uploaded?
No. The count runs on your device. Opening a file reads it in this tab and does not upload it.
